Have you got Come to the math side we have pi shirt? The people who will not see the point in the method on the left are those that were naturally good enough at mathematics to understand the intuitive nature of of how numbers are composed of other numbers. From someone who has taught maths to people who have struggled with it for a long time, teaching the structures and ideas of the method on the left actually does open doors to understandings so they can move on to other types of mathematical ideas. Consider if you like, that if all we did to teach calculus was teach rule after rule after shortcut after shortcut, then people like yourselves would never develop the full connection and beauty to what calculus means, the secrets it holds and use it then in more creative ways.

This is exactly the same. Instead of going straight to a shortcut method let’s allow them to explore the connections and make meaning so they can apply something as simple as multiplication in other ways later on. I’m disappointed that this page whose name purports to be encouraging a love of mathematics would see fit to put any method of engaging with mathematics in a bad light. Let’s instead maybe all agree that if it works for some people than isn’t that great. The one on the right is just a memorized procedure while the one on left shows multiplication as an area model and develops conceptual understanding. It starts slow but with time students will be able to build this model in their head and do it mentally.

Left side students will understand algebra much quicker… having tutored through trig and getting through calc III… I had to teach distribution more than actual subjective content. It’s called common CORE because it is teaching the actual core principles… you can build on a core… but the memorization of an algorithm gives you ONLY that memorization. You made a simple computation, made yourself some coffee, walked your dog. In the same amount of time, this woman can teach a whole class of third graders a valuable skill that will serve them for their whole lives. You’re not winning this contest, and it’s not even close. Hope you like Come to the math side we have pi shirt. Thank you!
