When The Phantom Menace premiered in 1999, both Darth Maul and his double-bladed lightsaber instantly became fan favorites. It was a unique and new presentation of the classic lightsaber, quickly becoming iconic. In 1993, Dark Horse Comics began publishing a popular comic book series titled Tales of the Jedi that took place several thousand years before the films, during the era of the Old Republic. In the issue Tales of the Jedi: Sith War 3: The Trial of Ulic Qel-Droma, a Jedi by the name of Exar Kun (who would ultimately fall from grace and turn to the dark side) wields a blue double-bladed lightsaber in this story. As this issue had a publication date of October 17, 1995 this debut predates Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber by nearly four years.
Artist Christian Gossett is responsible for creating this first double-bladed lightsaber in Star Wars lore, which George Lucas would directly borrow for Darth Maul’s weapon on screen in Episode 1.
