Famous cats in History- not one this time but the many who belonged to Freddie Mercury the lead singer of the rock band Queen. Freddie was a lifelong cat lover and at one time shared his Garden Lodge home in Kensington with as many as 10 cats. They were the inspiration behind several of his songs-including the famous ‘Delilah’ who was one of his favourites. Freddie’s cats, Goliath, Deliah, Oscar, Lily, Tiffany, Romeo, Dorothy and Miko. In 1985 he dedicated his solo album ‘Mr Bad Guy’ to Jerry- being one half of a pair of cats that he once owned called ( you guessed it) Tom and Jerry. Here he is holding Oscar a large ginger tom.
In the last video that he ever made in 1991- ‘These are the Day of our Lives’ he is shown wearing a waistcoat decorated with felines. These are all his own pets and had been painted onto the waistcoat. It was created by Donald McKenzie and pieced together from photographs of the cats. Many came from Blue Cross animal shelters and they included Miko, Dorothy, Romeo, Lily and Goliath- a tiny black cat fond of hiding. Freddie’s cats slept on his bed when he was ill and he made sure that provision was made for them all after his death. He passed away in 1991 from bronchial pneumonia having also been a sufferer of AIDS.
