GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (4/10): Including this new one, I’ve now seen 5 of these movies. ‘Godzilla’ (1998), ‘Godzilla’ (2014), ‘Shin Godzilla’ (2017) and ‘Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters’ (2017). Gotta be honest, none of them have been very good. Taking place 5 years after the events of Gareth Edwards’ 2014 ‘Godzilla’, it would appear that 17 monsters (a.k.a. titans) have been discovered dormant. The antagonists want to use these titans to destroy the world, so that by their twisted logic they can save the world. It actually seemed to me like there was a little bit of Thanos’ logic in their thinking. Have you got Godzilla planet destroyer shirt?

Anyway, the humans who are not genocidal maniacs figure that perhaps the destructive titans that have been woken up can be defeated by the titular King of the Monsters, Godzilla. I think that’s the plot. To be completely honest I struggled sometimes to follow all the ridiculousness that was going on. Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Aisha Hinds and O’Shea Jackson Jr. I’d like to congratulate casting director Sarah Finn for somehow managing to compile such an incredible list of actors; all of whom are overqualified for this big dumb movie. I can only imagine that huge pay cheques must have been literally waved in their faces as they were forced to sign a contract before ever getting a chance to read the script. If that didn’t happen, then God [zilla] only knows why they would possibly agree to be in it. One of the complaint’s people had about the 2014 film was how poorly the human characters were written. I agreed wholeheartedly. After seeing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, I could probably look back and reminisce about how much more rounded those characters were in comparison to these ones. Seriously, despite a plethora a big name actors, there isn’t one character I cared about.
