“American Conversations That Happen”. At an indoor playground Saturday in Maple Grove, MN, I walked up to a black dad holding his toddler and said, “You have a handsome little guy there!” When he thanked me, I went on with, “I know I look white to you, but I actually have three black daughters.” He smiled broadly and said, “That’s great.” I’m not yelling I’m an African American girl we just talk loud shirt. I added, “Believe me, my wife and I didn’t know what we were getting into caring for African American GIRL hair.” His face lit up with understanding as he nodded vigorously.

Karen, who’d been 10 feet away because I’m the extrovert and she isn’t, sidled up. I continued, “Yep, cutting the rubber bands out with razor blades, undoing braids and poofs, washing and conditioning, and redoing it all every week was something we white folk were seriously not prepared to do!” Clearly getting my drift, the gent declared, “I only have boys, but I understand — I have sisters!” Gesturing toward his little one, I said, “Well, our plan was to adopt ONE African American BOY—but God laughed and gave us THREE GIRLS.” Karen then joined in energetically with, “At Target with the girls one day, I even accosted a black mom to plead, ‘Help me! I don’t know what I’m doing!’”

We all laughed together. When this nice fella showed interest by asking the age of our girls, I told him, “They’re 24, 21, and 20.” He continued, “In college?” I responded proudly, “The oldest is working and the other two are in school.” He stated, “That’s terrific.” After chatting briefly about being up from Denver to visit our daughter, we said our goodbyes. As Karen and I exited the building, I mused, “I think I’ll post about that experience.” When she asked, “Why?” I said, “Well, according to the media, some politicians, and the Social Justice Warriors of the world, that fun conversation doesn’t happen in America, because, you know, we’re a racist country.”
