There will always be a special place in my heart for the Peanuts gang. I grew up enjoying the Peanuts comic strip in the newspaper and of course the annual Charlie Brown Christmas special with the iconic Christmas tree. The first musical I ever played was “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” (Thank you for your faith in a 14-year-old, Sue Fenley Meyers), followed the next year by another Peanuts-related musical, “Snoopy!” (Thank you again, Sue, for that and so many other great opportunities.)

Those familiar with Peanuts, and Snoopy in particular, should recognize Sarge’s role in this little video. Sarge has a favorite perch — like Sheldon Cooper’s “spot” — where he sits for hours on end, watching the passersby — or maybe even looking at Dogtopia of Houston, where he spends most of his days playing. Regardless of WHAT he’s staring at, Sarge’s position and posture always remind me of Snoopy in his “vulture” pose, a clever theme Charles Schulz revisited frequently.

Placing Snoopy on his doghouse or on a tree or some other perch, hunched over and looking down at someone or something, patiently waiting for the right moment to swoop down. Of course, Schulz would add thought bubbles, filling in the blanks for us. As a result, I do the same, contemplating what Sarge must be thinking whenever I see him on his spot and in his vulture pose. PS If I seem more professional than usual in this piano video, it’s because of the brand-new Adjustable Empire Duet Concert Artists Bench. Sarge isn’t the only one with a favorite perch.
