In the interview with Piers Morgan that aired Tuesday, Trump was asked if he wished he had served in Vietnam. “Well, I was never a fan of that war, I’ll be honest with you. I thought it was a terrible war. I thought it was very far away,” Trump said. “At that time, nobody had ever heard of the country.” I know that Long ago is never far away for those who served in Vietnam. Trump received 5 deferments to avoid serving in Vietnam, including one attained with a physician’s letter stating that he suffered from bone spurs in his feet.

The reason people are upset by this is not that he did not serve, it was because he did not serve because his daddy got a doctor to write a false report to get him out of it. Now that he is a politician, he claims to be gung-ho for the military. You can still serve in a behind the lines capability, if you really wanted to serve. It’s the hypocrisy on display now that people do not like. True. The point is not about whether you believed in the Vietnam war or not. By 1969 nobody felt we needed to be there. The point is don’t opt out and then in your old age act like you are Sgt. Rock-Rambo.

I remember back then everyone trying to get out of being drafted. The dread my friends all felt as they announced the lottery numbers. Everyone knew the rich kids were getting out because of their family connections. Because long ago is never far away for those who served in Vietnam. Thats why today whenever I hear a veteran sticking up for Trump, I shake my head. Shortly before the whole debacle ended they had the final draft lottery, and my birthdate was in the high 200s, while my college roomate’s was 2. I never saw someone sweat so much.
