A few months before Apollo 11 landed on the Moon in July 1969, the world-famous Snoopy had his own expedition through space across the pages of the comic strip Peanuts. If you’re near Huntsville, stop by the Downtown Huntsville Library for the debut of “Snoopy Soars With NASA”, a new exhibition highlighting the cartoon trip — and how Snoopy and Charlie Brown played a role in the real-life Apollo 10 mission! Apollo 10 crew, Cernan, Stafford and Young. This was a dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 Landing. Gene Cernan went back on Apollo 17 and is the last man to walk on the moon. John Young returned to the moon on Apollo 16.

Tom Stafford went on to head up the Apollo-Soyuz programme. The Command module, Charlie Brown (the LEM was Snoopy), is in the Science Museum. These guys are and always will be my heroes. I’m visiting London, Edinburgh, and many parts of Ireland this summer, I’ll be in Cork for the Apollo 11 50th (not sure if I’m sad or happy about that). Obviously, I’m planning on visiting Charlie Brown at the Science Museum in London, and pretending its the solstice at Stonehenge but is there anything else I should see? It hurts a little that I won’t be at KSC or JSC for the 50th…but I guess I’m avoiding the crowds? Thanks in advance for your tips!
50 years ago Snoopy and Charlie Brown paved the way for the first lunar landing with the Apollo 10 mission (which was designed as the full dress rehearsal for Apollo 11). Since it would be “snooping” around the moon and sniffing out a landing spot for the first humans on the moon two months later, the Lunar Module (LM) was nicknamed “Snoopy” and the Command Module (CSM), its guardian, became known as “Charlie Brown”. The Peanuts characters which were highly popular at the time became the unofficial mascots of the Mission and even decorated Mission Control in Houston.
