“Social workers change the lives of many in just one day. Imagine the impact made in a lifetime career…” Today is World Social Work Day and March is National Social Work Month. It also happens to be National Noodle Month. We married all three ideas and invited all of the social workers from local skilled care communities and hospitals to come pick up a colander of goodies as a thank you. The colander held Raos pasta sauce, red wine, noodles, parmesan cheese, a pasta utensil, and a kitchen towel. We also raffled off a Noodles & Company gift card. Thank you to all of the social workers out there working so hard to help so many.

Being a social worker
Being a social worker is not for the faint of heart. Majority of the people I work with are going through the hardest times in their lives. Did you know that the average career span for a social worker is 7.5 years?! It certainly is no surprise to me. We get verbally abused, threatened, and complained on daily. As I approach my fourth year as a practicing social worker, I have seen more things than a person should at my age. Some call me an old soul. I attribute my life wisdom through my experience as a social worker.
It’s not easy being the bad guy. As a social worker you are bringing people to the reality that they don’t want to see/accept. Some aren’t ready and others aren’t willing. As cliche as it sounds, you really can’t make a person change. Social workers change the lives of many in just one day Imagine the impact made in a lifetime career shirt. They have to want it themselves. It is one of the most frustrating things about my job. Remembering that people have the right to make bad decisions. Being okay with that has helped me through a lot of heartache and sleepless nights.Today, someone sought me out in a restaurant and asked me if I remembered them?
I didn’t immediately recognize them. I see a lot of people on a daily basis. They wanted to tell me THANK YOU for being there for them during one of the hardest seasons of their life. Something I don’t hear on a regular basis from patients/clients. All of this to say, kindness and a smile really do impact people. That small thank you is what makes my job worth it. And that grimace look I get from people who ask me what I do for a living followed by WHY?! That small gesture is exactly why I am a social worker.
