Today, the downside of broadcasting without an editor…Last week, the daughter of Eric Garner tweeted out the home address of one of the New York cops involved in the arrest death of her father. She quickly took it down. I want to believe her claim that she didn’t realize others could see it or link to it, or that it might put anyone at or near that address in danger. But Twitter is not a place to hide secrets. Too often, it’s a place to broadcast things to the whole world before you’ve taken time to think about whether that would be a good idea.

Like Spike Lee, who at the peak of rage over the Trayvon Martin case, not only tweeted the address of George Zimmerman’s parents, he tweeted the wrong family’s address. It cost him an apology and a legal settlement. The Good 46, The Bad 99, The Ugly 93. There’s an old saying, “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and let the world think you’re a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” It may be time to update that: “It’s better to think before Tweeting than to Tweet before thinking.”
