Anyone on here a fan of the Last Podcast on the Left? I have The Last Podcast on the Left shirt. Please let me know if you’re interested. For decades, women were leaders in computer science but then, in 1984, their representation in the field dropped dramatically — in a way unseen in any other scientific or technical field. In an excellent segment on NPR’s Planet Money, Caitlin Kenney and Steve Henn unravel the mystery of what happened to cause women to drop out of computer science in astounding numbers. And, what they discover offers valuable insight on how gender stereotypes, especially as they pertain to children’s toys and marketing, can have far-reaching and unforeseen effects.

The first entry in The 80’s Still Scream Flashback Series is this vintage newspaper ad for the original PROM NIGHT released on July 18, 1980. The ad on the left is for 7/18/80, the eve of its national debut. Released by Avco-Embassy, the film went on to become a smash success, making over $14.5 million at the box office and earning its place in horror history and cementing Jamie Lee Curtis as America’s Scream Queen. Worth noting are the films that accompany it as a double-feature (why don’t they have these anymore?), THE HILLS HAVE EYES at one theater and another pairing it with the first PHANTASM. That would have been a treat!
Podcast listeners, what are some of your favs? I’ve been chewing through a LOT of podcasts lately, and I need some new ones to listen to on flights/driving to work. I’m a big MFM fan, I love Last Podcast On The Left, Armchair Expert, I like crime and comedy podcasts a lot. Gimme your recommendations! Street Fight Radio, Season of the Bitch and Trillbilly Worker’s Party for politics and news. For comedy I really love What A Time To Be Alive. I listen to a ton of podcasts lol. 2 music ones I really like are And Introducing, which is just about wild stories from pop music, and Cocaine & Rhinestobes, which is all about country music in the 20th century.
