The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed. The desert was the apotheosis of all deserts, huge, standing to the sky for what looked like eternity in all directions. It was white and blinding and waterless and without feature save for the faint, cloudy haze of the mountains which sketched themselves on the horizon and the devil-grass which brought sweet dreams, nightmares, death. An occasional tombstone sign pointed the way, for once the drifted track that cut its way through the thick crust of alkali had been a highway. Coaches and buckas had followed it. The world had moved on since then. The world had emptied.

So, I just finished reading Steven King’s “Dark Tower” series… Fantastic. A western/sci-fi/horror magnum opus. I had read the first 3 volumes decades ago, but then life happened. Finally finished it all off yesterday. It was definitely worth coming back to. Radically different from anything else King’s ever done. So glad I took the time to read it. Roland Deschain is one of literary fiction’s greatest characters. “The man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed…” Anyone else ever read this?

Who never love Stephen King’s book?
One of my favorite fictional characters is Roland Deschain, from Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” series of novels. Set in a fictional, post-apocalyptic version of our world, Roland is the last of the gunslingers, knights of a now-lost world. Undeterred and alone, Roland relentlessly pursues the man in black, the personification of evil. From the opening line of the first book: “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” I’ve envisioned creating a shot to illustrate that first line for some time, and I finally made the trip to the Alvord desert in Southern Oregon to try to achieve it. I love the idea of a character so driven towards his goal that he will pursue it to the point of walking the desert in the cold of night, just to get a little closer.

I have like 15 Stephen King books!!!! I have and have read Dark Tower (awesome read) I don’t think I have found a King book I didn’t love!!!! Every year on my birthday I read The Stand. Lol my Absolute FAVORITE book!!!! I’ve read it more than 30 times!!!!
