Last year’s Pixar film, Coco, was inspired by observances of the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) holiday in Mexico. Prior to the colonization by Spain, indigenous people remembered their deceased ancestors during the summer; as Catholicism took hold, the timing shifted to coincide with the Christian Calendar’s Triduum of All Hallow’s Eve, All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day.

In Mexico today Ofrendas (memorial altars,) are lovingly and creatively composed, to remember and honor departed relatives, or people who are honored and respected. Ofrendas include photos of the deceased, their favorite food and drink, and maybe memorabilia or personal items of the deceased. Families visit cemeteries to tidy the graves of their relatives, and scatter bright marigold petals to guide the way for the souls of the ancestors back home for a visit.

Traditional foods associated with the holiday include special bread, called pan de muertos, candied pumpkin, and sugar skulls, frequently monogrammed with names of both the living and the dead. Traveling to Mexico to observe the authentic Day of the Dead celebrations is a cultural bucket-list item for many; there are a lot of options to experience this personally in 2019. In addition, many US cities celebrate Day of the Dead.

Clean white and baby blue sheets and robes are worn, washed, and recycled. The overwhelming stench of sterility prevails this depositing site of the broken, wounded, and easily abandoned. A four pack of skull shaped pills presents society’s solution. Numb everything in the hopes that one day someone might give a damn…
